Redefining city centre living

The Blockhouse

The Blockhouse
135 high quality build to rent (BTR) homes with shared amenity facilities on a challenging city centre site in the heart of Brighton, delivering a mix of 1, 2 and 3 bed apartments and townhouses.
Hnw Architects Pelham Street Brighton Site Plan
We re-imagined an approved outline residential scheme to suit the preferred tenure and maximise the quality and commercial potential of the site. The BTR project comes with a shared main entrance, residents lounge, gym and communal roof terrace, to promote interaction between residents.

Bordering two conservation areas, issues of scale, massing and materiality were all critical in developing a concept proposal that delivered more homes than the outline planning permission. Effective engagement with the planning department and local conservation groups enabled a swift full planning permission that increased the outline permission from 125 to 135 homes, whilst respecting and enhancing the surrounding urban heritage.

Pelham Street is an ‘all-electric’ scheme with no fossil fuels consumed on site for either power or heating. This means that the carbon emissions of the development will reduce as the electricity grid moves to a greater proportion of sustainable sources.
