To assist meeting increasing educational demand, we collaborated with the London Borough of Croydon to develop proposals for several of the Council’s schools to increase their capacity.
Working closely with the Council, each Primary School, and their governing bodies, we engaged in a rapid and iterative client engagement process. This ensured each school design was tailored for individual needs, whilst retaining a ‘standardised’ concept for efficiency.

All proposals share a common design template initially based on the Department for Education’s standardised school design modules. They were adapted to meet the high design aspirations of each school and constructed using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) to reduce build time, cost and carbon footprint. To further enhance efficiency, all sites were developed and delivered concurrently throughout design and construction stages.
The 1FE school expansion project for Smitham Primary School, Coulsdon, involved the creation of a new two-story block housing classrooms, specialist activity spaces, a nursery and a studio space to host community activities. Additionally, refurbishment to existing teaching accommodation and site-wide landscaping contributed to a comprehensive transformation of the school.
The distinctive frontage helped realise the School’s vision to galvanise the school community with a new public face and identity. Other schools in this initiative included: Oasis Academy Byron, St Nicholas, Heavers Farm, Christ Church and Red Gates SEN.
