HNW Architects were pleased to join Kingsbridge, Wilten Construction and the team from IMI at Sopers Lane, Poole, to mark the official groundbreaking for the new Centre of Engineering Excellence, forming IMI’s new 105,000 sq ft Poole facility.
Designed by HNW Architects on behalf of Kingsbridge, and working with Wilten Construction for the delivery, the new facility will provide IMI with the modern, flexible space needed to support future growth while delivering on their wider decarbonisation and sustainability goals.
Located on a long-established manufacturing site, the new Factory and Offices have been carefully designed to accommodate IMI’s specialist operational requirements, while creating a healthy, high-performing workplace for their 240-strong team. The building targets a minimum BREEAM Excellent rating, an EPC A rating, an all-electric servicing strategy, with extensive rooftop PV generation — ensuring long-term operational efficiency and environmental performance.
The groundbreaking ceremony brought together representatives from IMI, Kingsbridge, Wilten Construction, the Professional Consultant Team, and Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole Council, alongside long-standing IMI employees. Guests took part in a guided site tour before construction works formally commenced.
IMI’s new build forms Phase 1 of a wider consented 207,000 sq ft redevelopment of the former Siemens site. Phase 2 will deliver a series of high-quality, sustainable business units ranging from 3,750 to 26,000 sq ft, supporting the local economy and providing modern accommodation for a range of employers in Poole.
Across both phases, the development will introduce significant new landscaping as part of the biodiversity net gain strategy, including a net increase of 123 trees, native planting and watercourse enhancements.
We’re proud to be working again with Kingsbridge and Wilten Construction to deliver a scheme that combines advanced manufacturing, sustainability, and long-term economic value — and we look forward to seeing the project take shape on site over the coming months.
