Heritage Revival

Given the castle’s nationally important heritage status, along with the proximity to the cathedral and setting within the South Downs National Park, a high-quality approach and an understanding of significance was required.

Central to the design ethos was to preserve and enhance the castle’s unique historic and architectural character, its grounds and listed Deer Barn building together with restoring the original courtyard form of the stables.

The proposals included the careful refurbishment and conversion of the substantial stable structures into twelve courtyard homes arranged around a new community green, along with new office accommodation for the Estate located adjacent to the existing working farm yard.

Striking views from the courtyard to Arundel Cathedral were preserved and enhanced, while safeguarding the extensive open landscape spaces and existing green assets.

To the south of the existing courtyard, a terrace of our new homes was proposed, arranged to create a hierarchy of public and private spaces, while creating new pedestrian links into the wider castle grounds.

The existing grade II listed Deer Barn, currently hidden away from view, would be revealed and add to the rich heritage of the estate.

A sensitive but robust renovation of the existing buildings was proposed, with the retention of texture and detailing to celebrate the history of the coach house and racing stables.
